Cooktop Spark Ops

On gas cooktops, you’re going to find a variety of configurations, so you’ll need to refer to the technical data for the unit you’re working on, but a majority of units operate under these same fundamentals.

Spark

When the user goes to initiate a specific cooktop gas burner, they turn a knob. Gas starts to flow, and a spark ensues. A common misconception is that only the spark for the given burner will spark. This is generally not the case. All spark electrodes will produce a spark.

As you can see in the wire diagram below, the switches themselves connect line voltage to the spark module. Regardless of the switch engaged, the spark module gets line voltage from the same source.

Troubleshooting

Constantly Sparking

  • If the unit is constantly sparking when the unit is plugged in, then you’ve likely got a switch stuck shut.
  • If the sparking occurs when you turn the knob and does not stop, then you might want to check to ensure the switch is properly seated on the gas valve.

Getting Spark, Getting Gas, No Ignition

  • Check that the spark is actually sparking. Sometimes damaged spark holders will cause the spark to occur elsewhere. Ensure that you are seeing consistent spark at the electrode.
  • If debris gets under the cap and in the burner head, this will cause gas to flow in directions it should not.
  • Try igniting the gas burner with an external source, such as a lighter. See if it lights and stays lit.
